EXCERPT

The noise of the city was muted in the park on the banks of the river. The cobblestone paths went off in every direction and extended right up to the wall which held the river back. Across the river was another park named Pettibone Park. The twin parks were in two different states. Pettibone Park was in Minnesota and the Waterfront Park was in Wisconsin. Only the waters of the Mississippi river separated them. The late afternoon was waning into early evening and the sky was bursting in hues of gold, red and purple as the sun disappeared beneath the western rim. The colors were reflected in the gently lapping waters of the Mississippi river. Everything appeared normal until the air began to shimmer wildly. When the air stopped wavering, a man stood on a previously empty grassy knoll.
He was tall, around six foot, three inches, and his hair was the color of rich coffee. His eyes were deep green in color and his skin was tanned. He was dressed in jeans and a flannel shirt and he wore moccasins on his feet.
He looked around the area. The city was behind him. He turned and began following the path that would lead him to its heart. La Crosse was a university town and it was there, at the university, he would find the man he was looking for. He was a man on a mission, and Jack knew he would have to move quickly. He was looking for a man who could cause trouble for humanity. If his mission was successful he could bring around the end of the world as mortals knew it.
Ethan had given him the name Wade Kellerman before he left the Council room. Leon told him they were looking into why they hadn't been able to see what Kellerman was up until now. Michael Kane's visit to the Council had alerted them that someone within their own ranks was hiding the demonic activity going on. He couldn't tell them a name but he showed them what to look for.
When he found the university library, Jack paused to check his finder. It was the size of a Garmin but so much better. He had programmed the finder with Professor Kellerman's DNA and now it would find him wherever he went. This wasn't Jack's first trip to La Crosse; he'd visited a few hours ago. He appeared in Wade's class and gotten a sample of his DNA from a water bottle he'd thrown in the trash. He returned to the Council and did a preliminary search of the Professor's life. Using the extensive library available Jack knew all about Wade Kellerman from his search. He knew where Wade was born and where he grew up. All he needed to access now was Wade's commitment to his projects and what he found disturbed him. The Council had been correct about the red flags they'd found.
Now he was back to finish what he started earlier. His finder indicated Wade was in the library.
