If the hero is a shape shifter, he will be a wolf. But is that a cliche? I don't know. There aren't too many possibilities out there when it comes to macho animals. I do like the big cats however.
But then of course I could go with the idea that the character doesn't really shift but in sleep can be one with the animal.
So big cat or wolf?
shape shifter or becoming one with the animal?

Think I'm leaning towards the Cat but maybe not the black one. Hmm...
