Shape Shifter Saturday

I really like that one can see the rosettes on the black cat.

Well, once again we have shape shifter Saturday. Catching Meara is my WIP. The heroine is a technical analyst with FBI and the hero is profiler.  I'm having a little trouble melding the story line of the profilers with the romance.

What moves the story forward and what doesn't. What is fluff and what is not. Or are these just plotting bunnies that are getting in my way?

Short excerpt:

Meara had been seconds from revelation, mere seconds. Now quivering with terror, she huddled in the corner of her electronified office while lights flashed and popped all around her, knowing there was no where to run. Monitors flashed and burst, exploding and sending shards of liquid fire into the air. A cop entered the small room, his arms stretched forward, gun in both hands and a flashlight on top of his gun.

Three more cops followed behind. No, they were government agents. The logo printed in white across their chest announced their profession.

Bright lights swept the room in a slow steady arc, searching for her. Finally resting on her face, she shielded her eyes. Smoke from the crucified computers filled the cubicle making the agents choke. Sweat from fear beaded on her forehead and her heart lurched to her throat. She closed her hands over her heart as if she could slow the furious beating.

The heroine, Meara, was a self-taught hacker. But she messed up and hacked into a top secret government file. The FBI comes after not to put her in jail but to bring her over to there side.

The hero, Morgan James, is the shape shifter. He shifts in a jaguar.

Facts about Jaguars.

Family: Felidae, Cats view all from this family

Description The largest cat in the New World, Jaguars are unmistakable, powerfully built, spotted cats. Coat is tawny-colored with large black rosettes. Rosettes are also visible in the rare black morph.

Dimensions 1.7-2.4m, 52-67cm, 79-158kg; / 1.6-2.2m, 43-60cm, 31-85kg

Endangered Status The Jaguar is on the U.S. Endangered Species List. It is classified as endangered in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. This cat was once a regular inhabitant of the U.S., but now apparently only wanders north of Mexico. The settlement of the West contributed to its decline, as development modified the Jaguar's historical habitat and proximity with humans caused other problems. Jaguars were often killed for fear that they preyed on livestock, as well as for their fur, which was quite coveted. Although no Jaguars are currently known to be breeding in the U.S., individuals are still seen north of Mexico, mainly in Arizona.

Habitat Forests & woodlands, Scrub, shrub & brushlands, Swamps, marshes & bogs

Range Southwest, Texas

Discussion Active any time of day. The US population was hunted to extinction in the 1800s, but recent sightings in Arizona suggest the possibility of reestablishment. They are active both day and night. Solitary hunters of large and medium-sized prey in warm forests and desert scrub, they prefer streamside and wetter habitats.

It's Guy Day Friday

Cameron Savage is a respected Doctor. He is, in this world, what is called an Outsider or some call Barbarians. During the wars the Outsiders maintained their immune system and were able to fight off the horrific diseases that terrified the world. Now years later the other race of people, City Dwellers, their towns are encased in a bubble to keep them germ free.

P.S. Thieftakers are a group of people who arrest those who steel viruses from the Disease Control Center. Sometimes they are not the most honest of people.

On guy day friday, we take a look at the guy's POV.

Cameron has a secret identity,  The Phantom.

The Phantom

"Little rebel."

The Phantom was sitting in his glider staring at a small box of flash pins. It had taken infinite patience and practiced skill to rescue one Victoria DeMontville from complete ruin. He had not wanted to show his hand so soon, but he could see no other way.

"What the hell did she think she was doing?" Cameron muttered. Yet he knew, in truth, he had to admit that Tori had woven deceit and intrigue around herself, and she'd had no other choice. He didn't have to see what the pins contained to know they held a wealth of damning information on them.

But too much time had passed. After Drake had given him the letter from Jonathan, he'd done some investigating on his own. That had taken valuable time. Then he'd seen to some personal matters.

Sheridan and Morray must have heard the same rumors as Drake, and they had beaten him to Tower City. He shouldn't have tarried at Reding, shouldn't have wasted precious time on a few simple details he could have seen to later.

The Phantom sighed deeply. "Now what?"

He set the box on the seat next to him, staring into the distance for several long seconds, his mind racing, plotting. Slowly the glider lifted from the ground, air borne, hovering a few feet off the earth then it shot skyward.

He landed on a grassy knoll near his cabin then walked the short distance to his second home. Sliding a flash pin into his computer, he turned on the monitor intent on seeing just what he'd discovered.

Research on genetic surgery--pros and cons--what went wrong years ago when the process was first discovered.

The chemical make up of the signe virus vaccine Tori was working on, incomplete but almost finished. And the little white flower she had pleaded so hard to keep on that day two years ago when he had encountered her in the forest. Jonathan had given it to her when his gut told him no.

Key words to unblock the computers in their lab and so much more.

Pouring himself a glass of water, he drank deeply. He really didn't no how to proceed with this. Quickly, he told himself and carefully, but so far nothing had gone as he planned.

He would need to call on Jonathan. Perhaps between the two of them they could come up with a viable plan. Marriage to Tori would have to be accomplished as soon as possible.

And how would that go? He had not planned on marriage any time soon. He had never been in love. What would that emotion feel like? Could he learn to love Victoria DeMontville?

She was beautiful, cunning, intriguing, courageous and she was very willful. She had always had her own way. She had managed to come and go as she pleased while she was living at the nunnery. He laughed. Banishment, hardly. When Tori made up the rules as she went.

He had promised. But he had never thought the boon would mean marriage. Perhaps the advisor was even more cunning than Tori. Had DeMontville known at the time what he meant to ask?

He could not have known he would be assassinated at the hands of the crime syndicates he fought so hard to abolish. By Quentin Morray's little band of cutthroats. Thieftakers, just another name for criminals.

He understood why Tori hated them so. And that was another strike against him in Tori's eyes. She believed wholeheartedly that he was a thieftaker.

Rebel Heart is set five hundred years in the future. The hero and heroine come from very different backgrounds. One is an Outsider and the other a City Dweller, but they are both dedicated scientists. Cameron savage is a physician. Victoria DeMontville is a research scientist. They are both working to create a vaccine that will work against a deadly virus. Victoria has uncovered another way to help the victims of the virus, genetic surgery. During many of her forays into the musty archives of the city library, she discovers a technique that would give the City Dwellers a gene that would enhance an almost non-existent immune system. The technique is called allele transplant surgery.

"God Almighty!" Cameron Savage rocked on the balls of his feet before he moved swiftly and silently behind the furtive shadow ahead. Until this moment, Cameron thought the area was secured and safe. If something wasn't done soon to stop this boy, all hell would break lose.

The most powerful of the overlords were due into this area by noon. He, Cameron Savage, confidant of the most influential of all the overlords and also double agent, spy--thieftaker, was blessed with the burden of securing the perimeter.

His job was two-fold; the overlords must feel safe, and the wheels must be set in motion for their eventual capture and prosecution.

This City Dweller complicated his mission, had the nerve to steal away in the early hours of dawn to some secret rendezvous. It seemed he cared not for the laws and the tenuous peace. And why should the boy? The corruption that existed in this world went unprosecuted, terrifying all law-abiding citizens.

Cameron vowed long ago to put an end to the trafficking, to stop the thieves who stole the deadly viruses from the disease control centers, holding them ransom until the City Dwellers were all but bankrupt. He'd vowed to stop the corrupt and dangerous thieftakers from forming unholy alliances with the thieves, and in the process reaping fortunes from both sides.

For a moment he looked at the emblem sewn on his jacket and gritted his teeth. Once, the golden red symbol of the dragon, of the thieftakers, stood for something noble. A man wearing the emblem could be proud of what he did.

But no longer.

Over the last five years, progress had been made. The tension had eased somewhat, but the threat of contamination always lingered. One mistake, one infestation and all would be for naught. All the hard work and research over the long years would be wasted by a few heartless people. Corrupt thieftakers. The crime syndicates.

Any mistake could prove fatal.

While Cameron watched, the small figure stopped beside an old rotten log and knelt before whipping the knapsack from his back and rummaging through the inside. Seconds later a spade and a small knife were secured from the pack, and the figure began to shuffle through the dust, the dirt, and the growths found within. The boy sat back on his haunches and deposited debris in tiny plastic sacks.

A shiver snaked along Cameron's spine. The figure did appear elusive but hardly dangerous. He wore loose fitting camouflage pants and a matching shirt. His cloak was hooded and dark. When he looked up, he seemed to stare directly at Cameron. With lithe movements, he deftly packaged and labeled each article and moved farther into the dense undergrowth.

The darkened forest and the grey mist closed in around the City Dweller as he passed a huge redwood tree and disappeared. Cameron stepped forward, intent on tracking this person, but a flash of light where the boy had been digging made him stop. Cameron searched the ground for the object that pulled his attention away from his quarry. Then he saw the piece of jewelry, a ring, with the DeMontville crest.

Perhaps this wasn't a waste of time.

Cameron's hand closed around the ring and he held the jewelry a scant moment before he slipped it on his little finger.

He looked again for the wayward youth.

"Halt!" The person he trailed stepped from behind a shield of trees.

A slow smile of amusement curled Cameron's lip. "Halt?" Cameron leaned casually against the tree the juvenile had emerged from. His hands crossed negligently over his chest. "Why?" Cameron asked.

"You have no right to be here."

Cameron cast the boy a contemptuous glare. "And I suppose you do." Cameron straightened and stepped boldly toward the small tense figure.

"Yes...I..." The young man sounded unsure of himself.

"Tell me what you are up to and I might allow you to slip back over the wall. Perhaps the good people within will forgive you the indiscretion."

"It's nothing," the youth said shakily as he backed away.

"Leave the pack and go," Cameron said in what he hoped was his most menacing tone. This young man needed a good scare.

"No.”

"What?" There was too much at stake here. Cameron decided the boy's curt refusal was foolhardy, and perhaps a good scare was not quite intimidating enough to convince him. Perhaps he needed to be taught a more severe lesson. Cameron started toward him bent on that very thing.

The boy stood his ground, chin tilted upward in a strangely feminine gesture that almost stopped Cameron.

"No?" Cameron's eyebrow rose in mockery. "Don't try to defy me. It will do you no good."

The little hellion whipped out a gun and pointed it at him. "I kill thieftakers!"

"Hell!" Cameron swore again.

Despite the shaking fingers, Cameron had no doubt this boy would use the weapon. He could disarm the boy.

Easily disarm him. Swiftly he brought his hand up, landing hard beneath the boy's wrist.

The gun, that had moments before been pointed against Cameron, went flying into some green oblivion of forest and moss.

Retribution could be quite satisfying.

Satisfying indeed. Yet he was about to be deprived of it. That very minute the juvenile turned and ran, disappearing into the mist and the trees.

Seconds later Cameron picked up the sound of his quarry's rapid flight through the overgrown and nearly forgotten trail.

He moved swiftly through the forest and its pathways, as if he had intimate knowledge of every tree and bush within.

And he did.

But the boy proved elusive.

Cameron came to a complete stop, warily searching the surrounding area, listening intently for any sound, or a subtle mistake. Only silence prevailed in the forest.

Suddenly a camouflaged waif darted between two trees. Cameron followed. As he managed to close the distance between the two of them, his adversary reached for a handful of dirt and grass. The debris hit him squarely in the face.

"Damnation! Fight like a man or I'll treat you as I would a small child. You deserve a thrashing, by God." The dirt did not slow Cameron. He started after the brat once more.

The boy slipped several times and was now scrambling on all fours as if he searched for something else to throw.

"Just try it." There was nothing more in the little clearing for the urchin to grab hold.

Cameron, more frustrated than he could ever recall, moved with lightning speed and agility. Like a thunderbolt, he crossed the few remaining feet between them and tackled the boy.

Fragile hips suddenly lay between his thighs, and something within him quickened as he held the soft form. Sheer amazement at the sudden insight held him still for a second.

Even as she struggled again, with what should have been the last of her strength in a final bid for freedom, beating upon his chest with her small fists, Cameron tried to decide what should be done with her. He caught her wrists and held them still.

"Who are you?" he challenged.

Nothing had changed, except...

Annie for Euro Reviews writes:

Rebel Heart is a well-written futuristic novel of a time that very possibly could come to pass, when viral plagues have laid the planet waste, and life is lived either in the sterile confines of domed habitats, or as pariahs in the outside wilderness. The world-building is excellent, vivid, and true-to-life. The characters will quickly catch and hold the reader's sympathies. The plot is quick, and takes time to examine many valid social, economic, class, and political issues as well. Christine Young delivers a winner which will capture the interest of futuristic/science fiction fans as well as the general reader.

Jasmina Vallombrosa for TCM Reviews writes:

Filled with drama and suspense, this book will draw you into the mysteries of science fiction. I was pleasantly surprised by Ms. Young’s storytelling talents as she wove not only a wonderful futuristic adventure, but also that of a passionate love story. I loved the main characters as they came to life on the pages. The plot was quite suspenseful and deliciously entertaining. As a result, I had no choice but to keep flipping the pages as I raced to the end. Bravo Ms.Young for such an extraordinary book from cover to cover!

Milestones

Anniversary Milestones

With three wonderful children, two beautiful granddaughters, and a loving and very understanding husband, we celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary yesterday. That is a milestone. As a friend jokingly put it last eve, you've been with the same man for 34 years...wow.

Another milestone: Until I started coaching a high school swim team I had never been overweight. With exercise and watching every mouthful, I was able to keep my weight at an expectable level. Unfortunately, for whatever reasons, when I started coaching I gained about five pounds every year and just during the swim season, putting on an extra fifty pounds.

On a 5'4" frame that is a lot of excess weight. I trained for a marathon and walked it, but did I loose any weight? No! My walking partner was also overweight. On many of our long walks we would talk about the South Beach diet and people we knew who had been on that one and were successful. There were other diets that came up but we didn't take the plunge until three years ago.

It was the last week in April and together we showed up at a weight watchers meeting. We embarked on a journey that would change my life as well as my self confidence. Crazy but I never thought I was lacking in the self confidence until I lost the weight. In approximately one year we had lost a combined total of one hundred five pounds. She had lost fifty-five pounds.

We have now kept the weight off for two years.

This post came about because of a reality TV show that I love to watch. The show is TLC's What Not to Wear. For a while I didn't understand why I loved this show. But I finally realized I loved it because it wasn't just a makeover show. I think I would have grown bored with that very fast. No, this show actually changes peoples lives. When I watch it, I see the transformations from people who are hiding from life to people who are ready to embrace everything about life.

I compare this a little bit to me. When I was heavy, I hated my body and while I didn't hide in oversize clothes, I can relate to the people on What Not to Wear.

What are some of your milestones and how have they changed your life?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
What is done cannot be undone.
England, 1326. Edward II has been dethroned. Queen Isabella and her lover, Sir Roger Mortimer, are at the pinnacle of their power.
Fated to rule, Isabella’s son becomes King Edward III at the callow age of fourteen. Young Edward, however, must bide his time as the loyal son until he can break the shackles of his minority and dissolve the regency council which dictates his every action.
When the former king is found mysteriously dead in his cell, the truth becomes obscured and Isabella can no longer trust her own memory . . . or confide in those closest to her. Meanwhile, she struggles to keep her beloved Mortimer at her side and gain yet another crown—France’s—for the son who no longer trusts her.
Amidst a maelstrom of shifting loyalties, accusations of murder propel England to the brink of civil war.
In the sequel to Isabeau, secrecy and treason, conspiracy and revenge once again overtake England. The future rests in the hands of a mother and son whose bonds have reached a breaking point.
EXCERPT
Isabella – Westminster, February, 1327
The reminder that I was still married to Edward of Caernarvon stung like an open cut, fresh and deep down to the vein. Except for the sharp whistling of my indrawn breath, the room was silent. Bishop Orleton must have sensed the tension between Mortimer and me, for he excused himself, closing the door firmly behind him.
I turned away to face the row of windows, the world beyond dark with night. In moments, Mortimer’s arms encircled my waist from behind, tugging me gently against him. I kept my body stiff, tempering my resolve against his nearness, but already my knees were weakening beneath me.
“Isabeau ... sweet heaven of mine.” Light fingers traced over my hips, wandering slowly up toward my ribs. His breath stirred on my neck, a fiery breeze of longing. “Let me hold you tonight, hour upon hour, until the dawn.”
I shook my head, even as I felt myself wanting to yield, to abandon all. “I’m afraid, Roger.”
He turned me around, his lips brushing against the crown of my hair, over my ear, the slope of my shoulder. Not until my breathing slowed and I half-closed my eyes, waiting for more, did he lift his head to speak. A smirk, hinting of something sinister, flashed across his mouth. Or perhaps I merely imagined it? His thumb stroked tenderly at my cheek, soothing away my worries. “Afraid of what—that he’ll go free? You needn’t worry, my love. I’ll make sure he never has the chance.”
INTERVIEW
1. What or who inspired you to start writing?
The movie Braveheart. Actually, I’d thought about being a writer a long time before that, but nothing had ever sparked my motivation. There are a fair number of inaccuracies in it, but the story – the tragedy, sacrifice and struggle for freedom – captured my imagination. I remember riding home with my husband from the movie and thinking to myself, “I want to write something epic like that.” It was one of those defining moments in life. It changed the direction of mine.
2. How did you come up with ideas for your books?
That’s an easy one – from history. There are so many stories that deserve to be told.
3. What components are necessary for the genre of this novel?
Historical fiction varies so much. I think a lot of people believe all a writer needs for a historical novel is a basic knowledge of the times and to include physical details. But a story that relies too much on descriptions and a series of events soon falls flat. You can set the framework for a novel within historic occurrences, but if you don’t convey the characters’ hopes, fears, challenges and triumphs, the story will fail to draw readers in.
4. What expertise did you bring to your writing?
It’s probably unusual among writers, but my educational training was in scientific research. While I didn’t study a single subject in college that has anything to do with my books, what it did teach me was how to research something – and that even supposedly objective scientists looked at things with a bias. Historians, I later learned, do that, too. Other than the research aspect, my only expertise is my passion for 14th and 15th century history.
5. What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?
That I’m a dedicated runner – when I’m not injured, which is most of the time now that I’m, uh, over forty. The great thing is that my kids are both competing in collegiate track and field, so I get to live vicariously through them. Back in the day, though, I held my high school’s mile record for seventeen years and ran on athletic scholarship at a Division I university. Unfortunately, I didn’t discover until a few years ago that I was running around with one leg ½” shorter than the other, thus the chronic injuries.
6. As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
I have one more novel of biographical fiction about Welsh prince Owain Glyndwr well under way, but after that I plan to change gears a little. Maybe a romance that incorporates past lives or a piece of contemporary literary fiction. I try not to get too far ahead of myself on projects, but do keep a trusty notebook of ideas to draw from.
7. If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?
James Douglas! I’m obsessed with him and it probably shows in my Bruce stories. He was Robert the Bruce’s right hand man and closest friend. Stealthy, soft-spoken and good with a sword, he’s not a man you’d want to meet in a dark alley, but one you’d definitely want watching your back. Okay, maybe I’d like to be his love interest, rather than him, but I have a bad-boy crush on him.
8. Do you belong to a critique group? If so how does this help or hinder your writing?
I have in the past and it was a very enriching experience. I still stay in touch with several members from the group. More recently, though, I’ve stuck with a couple of trusted crit partners who write as fast as (or faster than) I do. These two gals let me know when something works, but they’re also not shy about telling me when a scene needs to be hacked apart and redone. When I gave my friend Reb the critical scene for The King Must Die, she kept asking me, “Why? Why are they in the tunnel?  Why are they getting drunk? Why didn’t they just stay put or leave or…” She made me think, darn it.
9. What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
Best advice? “Tell stories you’re passionate about. It shows in your writing.” Worst advice? “Don’t write in first person because it sounds like self-indulgent rambling.”
10. Do you outline your books or just start writing?
Oh, I outline at the beginning. But often the story takes on a life of its own. Chapters appear and disappear spontaneously, it seems. While outlining The King Must Die, I had far more chapters planned than what it ended up with. As they say, sometimes less is more.
11. Do you have an all time favorite book?
I’m going to cheat, since I can’t pick just one and list three: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein, The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom, and A Dog’s Purpose by Bruce Cameron.
12. Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
Just a snatch, since I’m not sure which project I’ll finish first, but I have a rough draft finished of a historical about 15th century Welsh prince Owain Glyndwr and also a burgeoning synopsis for a time-slip Scottish novel.
13. What is your favorite reality show?
Great question, thank you! I’m a reality TV show freak. The singing/performance shows like X-Factor, The Voice and American Idol usually have me glued to the screen, but my guilty pleasure is The Bachelor or Bachelorette. My husband swears it’s junk, but by the finale he’s standing next to my shoulder going, “I can’t believe he picked her. That other chick is so much hotter.”
Thanks letting me stop in to chat with your readers, Christine. It’s been fabulous fun!
A Stress Filled Day!
My husband and I had a plan yesterday. We were going to weed and bark dust our courtyard. The idea was to work all day until we finished.
The best laid plans...
Our wonderful, feisty dog Rogue decided he didn't like out plan. Now for all of you dog lovers, he is fine and very lucky.
We have a wooded area beside our house. When my husband unleashed him and let him wander in the courtyard, he decided he wanted to broaden his scope of adventure. He decided to check out the wooded area. A few seconds later we heard anguished screams but we couldn't see what was happening. My husband took off with the leas, and I stayed in the courtyard with my granddaughter. A few minutes later a deer raced by stopping suddenly at the edge of the yard. He/she stared at us for a few seconds, shaking, then bounded back into the forest.
About then my husband came back and asked if I'd seen Rogue. No, I hadn't. He walked into the garage. Apparently the deer had chased Rogue around the through the trees and around the house, until Rogue took refuge on the back door step.
Rogue had been kicked by the deer. He had a nasty gouge on his hind leg and one on his shoulder. We rushed him to the emergency clinic where they stitched him, gave him antibiotics and a list of things to do (all of which he hates). Oh, I forgot the stylish doggy collar.
He is getting back to his old self, and does not want the collar on or the warm compresses over his wound. Sigh...
My granddaughter spent yesterday saying, "Rogue has a big owie." I don't know how to spell that. owie
I'm beginning to dislike deer. Not only have they decimated my rose bushes and stripped my ornamental cherry tree but now they have hurt Rogue.
Cameron searched the ground for the object that pulled his attention away from his quarry. Then he saw the piece of jewelry, a ring, with the DeMontville crest.
Perhaps this wasn't a waste of time.
Cameron's hand closed around the ring and he held the jewelry a scant moment before he slipped it on his little finger.
He looked again for the wayward youth.
"Halt!" The person he trailed stepped from behind a shield of trees.
A slow smile of amusement curled Cameron's lip. "Halt?" Cameron leaned casually against the tree the juvenile had emerged from. His hands crossed negligently over his chest. "Why?" Cameron asked.
"You have no right to be here."
Cameron cast the boy a contemptuous glare. "And I suppose you do." Cameron straightened and stepped boldly toward the small tense figure.
"Yes...I..." The young man sounded unsure of himself.
"Tell me what you are up to and I might allow you to slip back over the wall. Perhaps the good people within will forgive you the indiscretion."
"It's nothing," the youth said shakily as he backed away.
"Leave the pack and go," Cameron said in what he hoped was his most menacing tone. This young man needed a good scare.
"No.”
"What?" There was too much at stake here. Cameron decided the boy's curt refusal was foolhardy, and perhaps a good scare was not quite intimidating enough to convince him. Perhaps he needed to be taught a more severe lesson. Cameron started toward him bent on that very thing.
The boy stood his ground, chin tilted upward in a strangely feminine gesture that almost stopped Cameron.
"No?" Cameron's eyebrow rose in mockery. "Don't try to defy me. It will do you no good."
The little hellion whipped out a gun and pointed it at him. "I kill thieftakers!"
"Hell!" Cameron swore again.
Despite the shaking fingers, Cameron had no doubt this boy would use the weapon. He could disarm the boy.
Easily disarm him. Swiftly he brought his hand up, landing hard beneath the boy's wrist.
The gun, that had moments before been pointed against Cameron, went flying into some green oblivion of forest and moss.
Retribution could be quite satisfying.
Satisfying indeed. Yet he was about to be deprived of it. That very minute the juvenile turned and ran, disappearing into the mist and the trees.
Seconds later Cameron picked up the sound of his quarry's rapid flight through the overgrown and nearly forgotten trail.
He moved swiftly through the forest and its pathways, as if he had intimate knowledge of every tree and bush within.
And he did.
But the boy proved elusive.
Cameron came to a complete stop, warily searching the surrounding area, listening intently for any sound, or a subtle mistake. Only silence prevailed in the forest.
Suddenly a camouflaged waif darted between two trees. Cameron followed. As he managed to close the distance between the two of them, his adversary reached for a handful of dirt and grass. The debris hit him squarely in the face.
"Damnation! Fight like a man or I'll treat you as I would a small child. You deserve a thrashing, by God." The dirt did not slow Cameron. He started after the brat once more.
The boy slipped several times and was now scrambling on all fours as if he searched for something else to throw.
"Just try it." There was nothing more in the little clearing for the urchin to grab hold.
Cameron, more frustrated than he could ever recall, moved with lightning speed and agility. Like a thunderbolt, he crossed the few remaining feet between them and tackled the boy.
Fragile hips suddenly lay between his thighs, and something within him quickened as he held the soft form. Sheer amazement at the sudden insight held him still for a second.
Even as she struggled again, with what should have been the last of her strength in a final bid for freedom, beating upon his chest with her small fists, Cameron tried to decide what should be done with her. He caught her wrists and held them still.
"Who are you?" he challenged.
Nothing had changed, except...
Reviews:
Annie for Euro Reviews writes:
Rebel Heart is a well-written futuristic novel of a time that very possibly could come to pass, when viral plagues have laid the planet waste, and life is lived either in the sterile confines of domed habitats, or as pariahs in the outside wilderness. The world-building is excellent, vivid, and true-to-life. The characters will quickly catch and hold the reader's sympathies. The plot is quick, and takes time to examine many valid social, economic, class, and political issues as well. Christine Young delivers a winner which will capture the interest of futuristic/science fiction fans as well as the general reader.
Jasmina Vallombrosa for TCM Reviews writes:
Filled with drama and suspense, this book will draw you into the mysteries of science fiction. I was pleasantly surprised by Ms. Young’s storytelling talents as she wove not only a wonderful futuristic adventure, but also that of a passionate love story. I loved the main characters as they came to life on the pages. The plot was quite suspenseful and deliciously entertaining. As a result, I had no choice but to keep flipping the pages as I raced to the end. Bravo Ms.Young for such an extraordinary book from cover to cover!
Gemini Love, Sex and Relationships
What it's like to date a Gemini Woman:
The Gemini woman is truly enchanting. However, dating her might feel more like a friendship then a real relationship due to her casual nature. This is not necessarily a disadvantage, for the casual man who shy's away from overly romantic emotions, she is the perfect woman. Since she is the astrology sign of the duality, she offers quite the challenge. One one hand, she needs to be nurtured, loved and catered to and on the other hand, she needs stimulation and novelty. She is very demanding and if you do not provide what she wants, she will be off onto the next adventure pretty quickly. To keep her interested is a challenge, not completely impossible so she is the perfect woman for the man who likes stimulation and a challenge. She needs a partner with a quick mind, she tends to poke and prod at the emotions and the minds of those who are mentally slower then her, make sure you can keep up to her wit or you will briskly be left behind. She is prone to keeping men on a string, not completely heartlessly, she is evaluating if the man is worth her attention and her time she has no time to waste with a dull man. Once you have her approval, she can easily become jealous. The reason for her is jealousy is that if she is going to open up to a man, when she rarely completely opens up to anyone, she does not want to risk her being deceived or hurt. If you are with a Gemini woman and she becomes jealous, you are on the right track to true love! Gemini women are so exciting that they are worth the effort, you will remember her forever!
What it's like to date a Gemini Man:
He is a great date - charming, witty, funny, clever, talkative, creative, adventurous, just make sure you can keep up with him! Women are drawn to Gemini men because of their zest for life and their vitality and enthusiasm. You may have competition to if you are trying to win his heart. Do not expect to win him and keep him all to yourself. He is flighty and dictates his own,. He will not allow himself to be pinned down and ruled by a woman. You are going to be his sidekick, not his passionate lover. He loves women and is very good at persuading them and manipulating them with his cleverness getting them into bed, he will say anything to get what he wants. He is the master of seduction. If you are looking for a great fling, the gemini man is your top choice.
How To Attract Gemini:
Love to talk, that is the first rule about impressing a Gemini. Be knowledgeable about that you talk about too because Gemini are intelligent and have lots of knowledge about many things. If you are an expert on a certain topic, teach them about it, you will impress them because this know-it-all sign is does not usually know fine details about a lot of things, they are too busy to bother to learn. Speak your mind, engage them in a friendly debate but never be too conservative, they find this dull. Be honest and loyal to a Gemini, once they have had their trust broken they usually will never get it back again. Gemini are easy to date, they will do any activity anywhere. Just have fun, like you would with a friends because that's what Gemini are, a great friend.
Gemini Erogenous Zone:
Gemini's hot spots are the hands and arms. These are very sensitive regions and are very receptive a massage and a gentle touch or stroke. This also calms the high-strung Gemini and relaxes them, setting the mood for passion. Gemini's usually love their finger being sucked or nibbled, a great integration into foreplay that will heighten the mood. Gemini women love it when a man grabs their hand and kisses it, like a princess.
Sex With Gemini:
Gemini loves to experiment and sex with a Gemini is full of novelty and excitement, trying anything and everything nearly anywhere. Gemini is not for the faint of heart or the shy and secretive lovers!
Shape Shifter Saturday
In honor of lovers of shape shifter romances and my upcoming shape shifter novel, today on my blog it's SHAPE SHIFTER SATURDAY. I don't have a blurb for my novel as yet and I'm only beginning the third chapter. I do, however, think I have a name for this novel. Instead of WIP, I might be calling this one, Catching Meara.
What do you all think?
My hero is Morgan James and he shifts into a black Jaguar. He likes water even in his cat form. Personally I love this because I can have some great water scenes. The heroine is not a shape shifter. She is a quirky technical analyst who can hack anyone or anything. When the hero meets her he discovers she has a rosette for a tattoo not too dissimilar from his naturally occurring rosettes.
Rogue Phoenix Press has published three shape shifter novels so in honor of them I'm posting a blurb for each.
Dragons Among the Us
As the title suggests these characters shift into dragons.
BLURB
In a world full of anomalies such as the platypus and self reproducing Komodo dragon, is the human race willing to accept that dragons may be real?
Sapien Draconi-human-dragon shape shifters-all over the world face this dilemma every day. The question has become life and death as their species is plagued with unexpected and unwanted shifting in the most unlikely of places.
The Ancient Ones-full-blooded dragons-can offer advice, but few seem to put forward workable solutions to the problem.
The fate of the shape shifters hangs in the balance, and an answer must be found before the Homo Sapiens find, dissect, and hunt Sapien Draconi to extinction.
Dragons Among the Eagles is set in the United States but I hear through a secret source there might be other Dragon books coming soon. And they will be set in various other countries.
BLURB
Aleda Sable faces the toughest decision of her life--to stay in dragon form, live as a two-legged or put one foot in the human world and one talon in the dragon world.
An urgent call from her newspaper editor sends Aleda to report on an accident whose driver appears to be a dragon. Authorities have the scene locked down and aren't allowing access to anyone. Television broadcasts flash pictures of scaly legs hanging from a crashed car. However, the bodies disappear into thin air. When the stations try follow-up reports, all they find are state highway workers busily tearing up the roads.
In determining the truth of the shifter disappearances, Aleda finds the truth of her own dilemma.
And finally:  Tiger Mine
Tiger Mine is set in Australia and I hope sometime there will be more shape shifter stories from Angela Castle.
BLURB
Licking her wounds after ending a six-year marriage to a serial cheating husband, Julia has run away to her grandfather's house high in the Australian Mountains, hoping to fix the old neglected building up while she contemplates her future, only to discover a huge white Siberian tiger on her door step.
Tiger shifter Mohan has escaped, jumped ship and is in hiding from the hunter who has ripped him from his world and murdered those he loved, when a curvy Aussie woman turns up at the old house he’s managed to shelter in these past weeks. He offers his services as a builder by day, returning to her by night as a tiger. Despite the strong attraction he has trouble fighting, what he discovers in Julia is a new kind of warmth and kindness he is in desperate need of.
Julia knows her gorgeous Russian handyman is harboring dark secrets, but can her heart stand falling in love and losing again?
Can they help each other mend the deeper issues which plague their lives? And bring hope of a new future. Or will Mohan’s past hunt him down and tear the new fragile bond between them?
These are all fabulous books, hope some of you pick up a copy and enjoy!
They are all available in print, kindle, ebook and nook.
It's Guy Day Friday!
Jacob St. John is a Pinkerton Agent. He has appeared in all five of my Lakota /Pinkerton series but had to wait until the last book to have his very own story. He fell head over heels with Etta Barringer the moment he saw her in the third story, The Locket.
Excerpt:
He swallowed hard and clenched his fists at his sides. While he watched her he felt awe at her beauty and innate grace. God, how he wanted that woman.
Once a fool always a fool, he admonished himself.
The laughter he felt was at himself and his shortcomings. She was beautiful and a more dangerous woman he'd never encountered.
He turned away. Making no excuses for himself he walked into the woods, bow and arrow in hand. With no intention of hunting game, he walked hard and fast until the sun settled on the highest mountain peak. Then he ran. Following familiar animal trails, he raced the wind until his sides ached and his heart thundered in his chest. He felt no peace of mind, no relief from the burning agony he'd lived with since the day he met her across a poker table in Mist Harbor. Since the day he'd admired her ability to drink him under the table and the day he longed to touch and taste such heartrendingly forbidden fruit.
The small mountain pool was opaque now, blacker than a storm swept night. Yet the water beckoned to him, called out his name. He disrobed, telling himself he was all kinds of a stupid idiot. The weather had turned, winter only a few hours away. Yet he quickly stepped forward. He stood in front of the water naked, praying for what?  Redemption came to mind, revenge following close on its heels.
The cleansing of his soul.
Etta Barringer needed salvation. Not him. Her soul was tarnished. Not his. He'd done nothing wrong.
In one fluid, graceful movement he dove. Ice water ripped around him, frigid, life giving atonement. His head broke the surface and he shook the water from his hair, sending droplets flying. A gasp filled him and he dove again, and again, and then another time until a weakness over came him and he swam to shore.
Every shadow assumed the appearance of a woman, every shift in the clouds with moonlight pouring through tree branches brought renewed ache to his heart and the need for satisfaction. Only Etta could give him the satisfaction he craved. But he didn't dare touch Etta.
He'd burn in hell if he did. Yet he couldn't even freeze her from his mind.
Quickly, he toweled dry with his shirt, pulled on his buckskins, and left the clearing, feeling little better after the frigid swim than he had before.
The lady haunted him; touched his soul and unraveled his nerves until he couldn't think straight let alone function normally.
Now, day and night, he thought of nothing else.
Dakota's Bride, My Angel, The Locket, The Talisman, and Forever His
August 30, 1895
Near Buffalo Creek,
South Dakota
The sun beat down. Searing heat waves hit the hard packed earth, blistering, charring everything, even the dry prairie grass. Jacob St. John, his arms stretched overhead and bound to a whipping post, no longer counted the lashes tearing into his back, no longer felt the horrific agony.
More than a half-dozen men and one woman were gathered in the sage-patched backyard of the run-down shack. So far not one person made a sound as they watched Chavez wield the whip, stripping the flesh off his back.
If Chavez weren't so angry and seeking revenge of his own, he would probably have just had him shot. Revenge was a powerful motive. Chavez wanted Jacob to suffer, to yell before he died. It seemed Etta Barringer did too. So far Chavez was toying with him, taunting and teasing him, cutting an inch here, ripping an inch there, not doing much damage but making mincemeat out of his back.
Jacob hadn't made a sound yet, not even a sharp, indrawn breath. He wasn't about to even though he knew Chavez would get impatient and start slashing. There was no hurry. Chavez had as long as he wanted. No one save Etta knew where he was, no one would come looking for him, at least not until the sun went down. By then Chavez would be done with him, and he would either be dead or buzzard-bait. For the life of him, he couldn't figure why Etta would hand him over to Chavez. She had always been Pinkerton to the core, yet she had betrayed him once before. If he survived this, he meant to have answers. He'd move heaven and earth to search out the lying Etta Barringer and find out exactly what she had against him.
The pain of betrayal at the forefront of his mind, and vows of revenge against the instigator of this kept him going. He focused on the woman's laughter and the scent of lemons that permeated his soul.
He had been taken by surprise. Still, he didn't go down easily. It took all of Chavez's men to get him bound securely to the post in back of the shack. And of those men, not one came away from the encounter without a scratch. Blood from the multitude of small cuts Chavez had inflicted ran in rivulets from his back, pooling on the parched thirsty ground, soaking into the dirt, staining it.
He stood, his head proudly erect and that seemed to draw anger from Chavez. The grip of his fingers curled around the top of the post, the only sign of Jacob's pain--and fury.
The first real stroke of the whip felt like a red-hot branding iron searing across his back. Jacob didn't flinch, nor would he as long as he could hear her laughter or smell lemons floating languidly on the breeze. He wished he could see her, stare into her beguiling, green eyes until she knew he'd never stop hunting for her. Fury at his own weakness rose, and the anger he felt deep inside simmered, because she'd always attracted him. Ever since she showed up in a small town in Oregon, seduced him then drugged him and left him to sleep off the opium-laced whiskey, she'd fascinated him.
Concentrate on her--on what you're going to do when you find her again . . .
Etta Barringer has made tons of mistakes and one big one is back to torment her. Not in a bad way but a very delicious way. The thing is the man who she betrayed months ago wants more than revenge from her. She saw Jacob St. John go through hell and pain in one day by a ruthless man. Etta knows this man, Chavez, wouldn’t stop looking for them until they’re both dead. As a Pinkerton Agent she is the first woman in her field and must do everything she can to prove that she can do anything. This is hard to do when she is supposed to work with Jacob. Something about him makes her doubt her work and ethics. Etta knows she’s good but she wants to be more than an agent she wants to be the woman he loves. She knows Jacob can never forgive her for her deceit but she wants his love. Can she be safe in his arms knowing that he still hates her? Or does he?
Jacob St. John is a Pinkerton agent determined to get Chavez. He is a bandit, ruthless and will not stop until he’s dead. Jacob has come close to death’s door because of one woman, Etta. He knew her as Fanny and Ginny but she is the same woman who captured his heart. She thinks he hates her but that is far from the truth. Something about Etta ignites his passion for her each day and her courage makes him love her more. Etta is determined to prove to him that she can survive anything even a blizzard. The days are cold and are meant for survival but the nights are when his seduction plans are set in motion. Seduction that he knows Etta cannot refuse. Just like the snow melting she melts towards him. Each night with her is one day closer to her leaving him. This is something he cannot stand and will do everything to prevent. He just needs to prove they belong together.
Christine Young has done it again in this historical romance. I applaud her for creating a passionate man like Jacob St. John and a heroine like Etta. I enjoyed how Etta was a strong-minded female, one that was working hard to prove that she could be tough and sweet as well. The Old West comes to life in this beautiful tale. The blizzards, betrayal, deceit and a ruthless bandito like Chavez made this a great romance. I can’t wait for more of Christine Young’s books. This definitely a recommended read!
But the trust is shattered when Jacob learns she is married to his sworn enemy; the man who left him in the desert to die.
Twice betrayed by the woman he secretly loved, Jacob St. John vowed not to let the sexually alluring, but life threateningly dangerous Etta Barringer get away. She was going to pay and Jacob was planning on surprising the deceptive beauty and making sure she knew just how fiercely exasperated he really was. Problem being, Etta was convinced that Jacob was dead.
Watching Jacob die by the hand of Chavez broke Etta’s heart and you immediately feel compassion for her while she tries to forget the blurry memories of his confusing death. Blurry because Chavez has drugged her and you know in your heart that Etta would have never double crossed Jacob….. again. Both times were accidental and almost comical in how they played out. Jacob had no clue and is determined to get his own taste of revenge. If only he could get those lustful thoughts out of his head!
Etta is charming, pure and simple, and you can’t help but feel her grief at her hand in Jacob’s murder. She determines to quit her job with the Pinkerton’s, feeling she is no longer worthy of the position.
I sympathized with Jacob as he plotted his revenge on Etta. Despite how cruel he planned to be to her, he just couldn’t get past the feeling that maybe, just maybe she was telling the truth. That perhaps she didn’t want him dead and wasn’t a conspirator with Chavez.
A romantic and passionate love story developed between Etta and Jacob, but both will have to put the past aside if they plan on a future together. Watching the two overcome lies and begins to trust and believe in each other, I was simply swept away into their world and cheered them on hoping that through all the mistakes and lies they could find their happy ending.
A captivating and intriguing story that sucks you in and takes you back into 1895 with a timeless tale filled with high drama, a ruthless criminal and two lovers who are intended to be together. If you want to keep on the edge of your seat , turning pages and wondering what will happen next or if Etta and Jacob will make it through all of their troubles, then this is the book for you.
