 Seduction of my Proper Wife: A Victorian Ménage at the Parisian Exposition
by Kristabel Reed

INTERVIEW:

1.            As far as your writing goes, what are your future plans?
To make more money than James Patterson. I know, it’s every writer’s goal!

As far as my stories, Seduction of my Proper Wife is only the first in a 6-book series set during the 1889 Parisian Exposition. I’m half-finished the second, Wicked Seduction, and have the next one, Masterful Seduction all plotted out.

However, as I was watching…man I don’t even remember what now. But I was watching TV or perhaps talking on the phone and suddenly I have this great idea for an Edwardian ménage, tentatively titled The Half-Breed Earl. I’m polishing that one now before my publisher sees it.

I have more plot ideas, all sorts of notes and such for future stories, but a girl can only juggle so many characters at a time. But I fully intend to write all those ideas!

2.            If you could be one of the characters from any of your books, who would it be and why?
ANY of my female characters, because they have the most fun with the most good-looking guy. And girl…or 2 guys.

Tough choice, I liked how Laurel from Seduction of a Proper Lady was seduced by Ethan and Braedon. I liked Alex from Risqué because she didn’t take any crap from anyone and slept with who she wanted. I really liked Elizabeth from Aycliff’s Vow because of the utter romance between her and Callum and his complete devotion to her.

3.            When did you first decide to submit your work? Please tell us what or who encouraged you to take this big step?
I toyed with it for a while, but then talked with a friend of mine from Texas who really forced the issue. My family was supportive, but they didn’t push, wanted me to go at my own pace. But my Texan friend told me straight out—submit! Do it! Now!

So I did. And the rest, as they say, is history. Complete with rewrites, rejections, and head banging. But I never regretted it and never looked back.

4.            What is the best and worst advice you ever received? (regarding writing or publishing)
I’d have to say the best was to keep going. Not to give up. Those who don’t try always fail kind of thing. Another author pointed me in the direction of the book, The First Five Pages by Noah Lukeman. It’s worth the price of it. Or see if your library has it or can get it (they’re good like that!)

Worst advice: Write simply to get published, not what you want to write. There’s no fun in that. I know, because I did try. And you know what? I burned that book. Literally. I didn’t like it, didn’t want to read it let alone write it, it wasn’t who I am or wanted to be. Because of all that, I couldn’t sell it. I don’t wonder why!

So I burned it (the ashes are scattered to the winds) and wrote what I wanted to. And I’m far happier!

5.            Do you outline your books or just start writing?
Outline. Absolutely. I tried the seat of the pants stuff, but then I slowed down because I wasn’t sure how things mesh, what direction I want to do, or even if I was being consistent with the characters.

With a nice outline, I know all that from the start. I know who’s who, what’s what, and everything in between. I can be flexible if a new idea, way, or character presents itself, but mostly I really do stick to my outline.

6.            Do you have any hobbies and does the knowledge you've gained from these carry over into your characters or the plot of your books?
I’m an old movie buff and a history buff, and both of those do carry over. I write a lot of historicals and love using little-known tidbits in my stories or for my characters to know.

I enjoy other things, travel, gardening, reading, and even something as universal as reading can carryover into a story, become a story my character enjoys.

It all melds together.

7.            Have you started your next project? If so, can you share a little bit about your book?
I always have a number of projects, and am currently editing one. I have one more I’m actually writing, one that’s fully plotted and started, and at least 4 more that are thoughts, ideas, concepts.

I’m editing Cursed Love my paranormal contemporary erotic romance right now and hope to have that ready by the end of the year.

I put Wicked Seduction on semi-hold to work on an Edwardian ménage. In this one, my half-English, half-Haitian earl almost died and because of that, decided to break out of the proper mold he used to inhabit. But, as the earl, he still needs to marry and there are 2 very eligible women vying for his affections.

8.            Do you have any family traditions or recipes you might like to share?
I love baking, and my blog often has recipes I’ve tried, or will try, from several of my favorite recipe sites. But since this is the holiday season, how about my flan?

Spanish Caramel Custard

            A creamy ending to this seafood inspired menu is the beauty of glistening caramel atop smooth custard.

1cup granulated sugar
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 can evaporated milk
3 eggs
1 vanilla bean
Serves 8

Directions:
1.    Preheat oven 350°F.
2.    In ideally a 9-inch round baking mold, evenly coat the inside with the caramel.
3.    In a separate mixing bowl beat eggs.
4.    Add in condensed milk, evaporated milk, and all scrapings from within the vanilla bean.
5.    Whisk together with eggs.
6.     Pour mixture into mold.
7.     Bake for approximately 1 hour or until the top is firm and golden in color.
8.     Remove from oven.
9.     Cover with a large serving dish to completely cover mold.
10.          Flip both mold and serving dish upside down. Tap the mold several times to loosen and slowly remove mold from plate, leaving the custard on the serving dish.

Caramel Glass
½ cup packed brown sugar
½ vanilla bean scraping
½ teaspoon hot water

 Directions:
1.    Using a large baking sheet, line with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
2.    Great aluminum foil or parchment paper.
3.    In a large saucepan, melt the sugar and vanilla bean scraping over medium-high heat.
4.    Occasionally shake the pan gently to release any sugar clumps. Note: Do not, under any circumstances, insert a utensil of any kind into the sugar.
5.    Continue to melt the sugar until it turns syrupy and copper in color.
6.    Remove saucepan from heat.
7.    As the sugar melts, swishing the saucepan. If mixture seems very thick drizzle in very hot water until the color is even and the mixture is loose enough to swish within the saucepan. Note: You may very gently stir it with a utensil, but don’t over work it.
8.    Remove saucepan from heat.
9.    Over the prepared baking sheet, start in the center and slowly pour the mixture over the aluminum foil or parchment paper.
10.          Tilt the sheet until it is evenly and thinly lined with the melted sugar mixture. If necessary, us a flat spatula to even mixture out.
11.          Place in the refrigerator and let cool for approximately 1 hour.
12.          Once cool, cover the caramel glass with either additional aluminum foil or a clean cloth.
13.          Using a blunt object such as a meat tenderizing mallet or a large spoon, and gently shatter the caramel glass beneath cloth or foil.
14.          Remove cloth or foil.
15.          Use shards of caramel glass to decorate custard in an artistic manner.

9.            Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?
Oh, a favorite! In Seduction of my Proper Wife, Philip and Lillian seek out the help of an Egyptian courtesan. After they use, and thoroughly enjoy Aria’s services, they have a choice: return to their proper English lives or find a way to keep her with them.

10.        Anything else you might want to add?
I always love hearing form people, whether it’s over a story they read or a time frame they’d like to see a ménage set in. I love history and love turning it on its ear even more! After all, I’ve already set 3 different ménage series in 3 different time frames.

I did try my hand at a contemporary, not a ménage, but it is erotic romance. Cursed Love: A Wicked Demon Story is my first foray into a paranormal contemporary. It’ll be available by Christmas, so keep an eye out!

Nikki Kent had spent her life running from the monster inside her. When she found Cooper Marquez's ranch, she knew she found home. Unfortunately, her demons followed her.

Cooper Marquez knew his lover had secrets, but hadn't figured on one quite like this. No matter what she thought, he wasn't going to let her go through anything alone.

Together they go on a journey to discover the secret to her curse. But when Nikki discovers the truth about her demon, will she leave Cooper for his own safety? Or can he convince her that nothing will stand in his way.

This is a paranormal contemporary romance with ancient Native American spirits, drug cartels, and one hot rancher to make it all better. I hope you enjoy it, since this is a departure from much of my other work.

BLURB:

Philip Thornton adored his new bride but found she was frigid in their marriage bed.

Lillian did not know how to ease her fear of the bed until she was freed from her past.

Aria was paid to educate and entice, but what she found was more than she ever dreamed possible.

The Parisian Exposition of 1889...the world is changing and the three of them are caught in its whirl. Philip and Lillian went to Paris to save their marriage and to help Lillian overcome her fears. Aria danced and seduced Lillian, but before Lillian left, Aria found herself seduced, in turn, by the beautiful Englishwoman.

When Philip and Lillian break all the rules and escort Aria around Paris for a week, will it be the beginning of their future? Or will this seductive interlude be nothing more than a dream?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Philip didn’t bother looking for his wife at the fair, it would be a nearly impossible task to find her in the meandering streets and crowded pavilions. And he was still agitated with Lillian. Instead he opted to walk to back to their hotel, Le Grand Hôtel de Paris.
As he walked through the crowds, all he saw were those from the dance, those who enjoyed the Danse du Ventre and each other’s bodies shortly thereafter.
Hasina’s words echoed in him, until he thought he’d go mad from the sound of the Egyptian’s promise. A woman is far more gentle with such things.
He doubted very much he could even ask Lillian to engage in such an activity. He wanted her, wanted her to relax around him to the point that he could show her all the pleasures of the flesh. Indulge in all the passion he had for her.
The Parisian streets were crowded, but he barely noticed the variety of offerings from the street vendors. Back at their suite, Philip opened the door and wasn’t surprised to find Lillian there.
He stopped just inside the opened door and watched her. She’d shed her jacket, but rather than hiding in the bedroom, sat in one of the chairs by the balcony.
And she’d been crying.
He’d crossed the room and knelt before her immediately, without conscious thought. The door slowly closed behind him, but Philip barely noticed. Lillian looked up at him, her beautiful blue eyes damp with tears, and emotion tore at his heart.
Moonless and frigid, the December night sent chills down Emma's spine. Yet she didn't stop at the lighted inn nearby, nor did she break stride when she stumbled over a rut in the muddy road. Instead, she pulled her skirts higher. A carriage raced by, hell-bent in the same direction, spitting mud as it flew past
A frantic look over her shoulder did nothing to relieve the fear. He was closing on her, forcing her from her hiding place. She stopped for a moment while she quickly shook the mud off her cape, then she turned to the little girl.
"You all right, Clare?" Emma asked.
The little girl nodded but didn't say anything, her face screwed tight with concentration, her breaths ragged and hard.
The big Mississippi paddle wheeler, due to leave in ten minutes, let out two loud, booming whistles. To Emma's frayed nerves, the sound was heart-stopping.
The wind from the docks smelled of fish and tar. When it shifted, she could make out the aroma of fresh baked scones coming from the inn. Emma gripped the tiny hand she held in her own a little tighter, and prayed that Clare could keep up the pace.
"It's only a wee bit farther. We can make it," Emma told the little girl, her sister. Half sister, she reminded herself.
Clare's father was not her own. His demonically handsome face leering at her while he calmly explained what he meant for Emma to do in the bordello was something she'd never forget.
Clare was a tiny and very fragile seven-year old. She had loving green eyes and a long, slender nose coupled with delicate cheekbones. Emma knew that someday Clare would grow into a classic beauty.
One long blond lock of hair slipped loose from Clare's cap. The little girl pushed it away with her free hand, wrinkling her nose disgustedly.
Frost coated the road, and each hurried step caused the almost frozen mud to crunch beneath their feet. A horse and rider passed them, the man tipping his hat as he and his mount thundered by. Church bells rang out, the sound hollow and thin. It was almost six o'clock. She had five minutes to reach the boat.
A gust of wind caught her broadside and whisked the hood of her cape off the top of her head. She grabbed the soft fur and pulled the fabric back where it belonged. Distracted by the wind and her haste to reach the boat, Emma caught the toe of her shoe on a rock and balanced precariously for an instant.
She swore softly under her breath.
Had only one month passed?
No, three weeks ago her mother had died and two weeks ago she had learned the awful truth. Lawrence Stevens had slowly poisoned her mother. He had given her a small dose of arsenic each day until finally her mother took to her bed. Several days later Emma had held her mother's hand while she breathed her last.
Emma would never have known about the murder if she hadn't overheard Stevens speaking in harsh whispers with a friend of his. There were other things said and promised, things Emma had not wanted to acknowledge.
Disbelief and denial had caused her to waste precious time. Seven days had come and gone since she'd had her last horrible encounter with her stepfather. It was an encounter that had left her with no doubts that everything she'd heard was the god-awful truth. Stevens had meant to sell her to a whorehouse. Still, she'd had a difficult time believing the extent of Lawrence Stevens's depravity. But when he'd installed her in Madame leBon's bordello, she realized too late that her life was in grave jeopardy.
And Clare, sweet, sweet Clare, had understood all she'd told her and perhaps more. With the eyes of a child, Clare had somehow sensed the evil that surrounded her father long before anyone else did.
Five long days and nights they'd spent on the run. Clare had not complained. No matter how exhausted or hungry she was, the little girl had pressed on, understanding the imminent danger that faced Emma. Clare had somehow known that Emma had to get as far away from Lawrence as possible.
This incredible romance is one I positively fell in love with and is good enough to read again and again.
Denver, 1893
A polished azure sky looked down on a day that vacillated between winter and spring--a day unable to make up its mind. Cool breezes lifted Angela Chamberlain's brand-new canary yellow skirt off the moisture-laden sidewalk. A blazing hot sun dried the puddles in the street left over from last night's deluge.
Unlike the day, Angela had no trouble making up her mind. Angela knew what she wanted out of life. She touched one finger to the sapphire earrings adorning her newly pierced ears.
She wanted adventure.
She had a terrible craving to see the world--to climb to the top of the Eiffel Tower, to walk the Great Wall of China. She yearned to fly in a hot-air balloon high above the earth, or ride in a gondola in Venice. She wanted to fall in love with a man who was as brave and smart as her father and as dangerous as Devil Blackmoor.
Angela's wish list had no end.
Instead of adventure and romance, in three short weeks she'd be enrolled in Miss Somebody's finishing school for young ladies, where knowing which fork to use was more important than riding with the wind on her favorite horse, Kangee. A place where changing one's clothes three times or more each day was common practice.
Two days ago she'd told her father she didn't want to go.
And two days ago her father had told her she would learn to appreciate the schooling and that she was a very lucky young woman. He'd also promised her a trip to the continent for a graduation present.
A graduation present! She wanted to yell at him, but wisely kept her mouth shut. She wanted to travel now. Today. But more than anything, she didn't want to be confined to the stuffy drawing rooms in the East. Just like her father, she needed freedom. But her father meant to take the choice from her.
To gossip and chatter with rich society women was not her destiny. To know which wine was served with fish would not make her happy. This was his dream for her. Sam Chamberlain needed to look to his own heart and remember the choices he had made twenty-five years ago.
Her destiny was out there somewhere, waiting for her to snap it up and hold the moment close to her heart. She knew what she wanted, and to prove her point, she'd bought a camera and had the machine sent over to the hotel. She meant to photograph all her adventures, every nook and cranny, every monument, every intriguing person.
Across the street and down two blocks, Devil Blackmoor had just taken the saddle off his horse. He brushed the stallion's back, all the while petting the animal's sleek coat and crooning into the horse's ear. Mesmerized, she watched his hands and the gentle way he stroked the horse.
She wished she had her camera.
Devil Blackmoor commanded her attention. He symbolized everything a father cautioned his daughter to be wary of. Despite the warning, Devil's strong jaw, his powerful shoulders and the confident way he held himself beckoned to every feminine nerve in Angela's body.
Angela clutched her hands to her chest, willing her gaze to shift to something or someone who wouldn't shatter her senses and set her blood boiling. Helpless to control her wayward heart, she kept looking back at Devil. She noticed everything about him, the way he moved, the way his denim jeans clung to his legs and the way they molded to his backside. Devil laughed at something the bouncer from the saloon said, and when he smiled, one edge of his mouth tilted crookedly. Angela's heart swooned and fluttered, and she thought she might never breathe again.
Allura McClellan's father wants to see his daughters married before he passes on and has decided to run a contest to see who can reveal Allura's secret and, if correct, the prize is her hand in marriage as well as her land and titles. She fights her father every step of the way, clinging to the reasoning that she does not want to submit to a man and give up who she is because she takes pride in all she has learned and who she has become without a husband.
All Hunter Gray's life, he has been treated horribly for being an English earl's bastard son and as an adult, fought for his country and became a mighty warrior. Now, he sees a chance to get everything he feels he deserves, money and land, and all he has to do is seduce Allura into marrying him.
Even though a crackling fire rears itself every time Hunter and Allura are together, they truly try to fight the attraction, but for different reasons. As time goes by, feelings start to change and as they are in danger of losing themselves and more, can Allura and Hunter both get what they want?
I really enjoyed this book by Christine Young. It has mystery, humor and, whew, steamy love scenes! An awesome group of characters make this read very entertaining, from the tough as nails Allura to her meddlesome younger sister, Aiden. There is never a dull moment throughout this book and you will surely not be disappointed. I can only hope that some of my favorites get a story of their own. Well done Ms. Young.
Eddington, Scotland 1815
"You can’t plan to wed me to that--that man down there!" Allura McClellan’s heart thundered and lodged in her throat. Balled into fists her hands trembled. "You promised I could marry for love. I thought when the last man failed to discover this imaginary secret you think I have, you would stop this craziness. I thought you would take the ad out of the Times and the other papers."
From the boxing ring below, fist met flesh, the sound echoing throughout. Hunter Gray whirled and ducked. He guarded his face to block the stinging blows his opponent rained down upon him. He spun and ducked again. The man he fought countered the attack, but he did not move fast enough. Hunter’s next jab was so fast and so hard the other man didn’t block the punch. The man staggered backwards, blood running from his eye. Men yelled and cheered for the two combatants. Hunter paused and spoke to the man he practiced with before the match continued once more.
Allura saw her life as she had planned it slip away as if it was grains of sand in an hour glass. She stopped pacing and watched the men below. She turned on her father. "The ad in the Times--giving me away to any man--you have gone too far. A marriage of convenience is barbaric. You promised." For a moment, she closed her eyes. She did not want to acknowledge anything that went on here. It was not her fault she could not find a man she loved. What horrific bit of bad luck had found her?
The laird cleared his throat. "Perhaps I have not gone far enough or soon enough. And the ad did not promise you to just any man. He must be strong enough and smart enough to win your hand."
It was not Allura’s nature to allow others to rule her fate. “These men,” she waved her hand in the air, frustration sweeping recklessly within. "They don’t want me. They come for one reason only. They are greedy and hungry for power. You have taught me everything I need to know. I can run your estate and all of your holdings. I’ve studied endless hours. I know the men who work for you. I swear I’ll defy your wishes. At the altar I will say no."
The McClellan’s grin faded as quickly as it had appeared and without further thought, he said, "Perhaps not, you are beautiful lass--one with rare promise. And," he stroked his chin, "no matter how much book learning a woman has she cannot dictate her own life. It is up to the men in her life to make sure she is happy and provided for."
A strained silence followed. She sagged against the stone wall. As if sensing her vulnerable position, she stiffened. Outraged and furious she looked upon her father. "They are money grubbers and want your land--our land. They have no right to any of your estate."
The McClellan held back for a moment, seemingly aware there was more than just a little truth in what Allura said. "How indeed?" he questioned her. Yet his smile was tight, forced. "I grow old. I only want this land secured and my daughters happy before I die. You are twenty-two. I have given you ample opportunity to fall in love. I thought it time to bring new blood to this land, a new man. I thought perhaps one would take your fancy."
"That man," she began. Her hand shook when she pointed at the man who danced and whirled avoiding each blow as if he dallied in child's play. She trembled so violently she could not speak. “Is an Englishman.”
BLURB:
With her golden hair and cobalt eyes, Allura McClellan was a trophy beyond compare. Her hand in marriage given to any man who could discover her secret, she set out to bedevil every man who answered the ad her father placed in the London Times until Hunter Grey an Englishman, discovered her island and banished all other men from her life. Burning with indignation and passion she was determined to keep her secret from the arrogant Englishman and to keep here independence at any cost.
The bastard son of an English earl, he made a name for himself in the service of his country. Hunter Gray vowed no one would keep him from winning the hand of the fair Allura and in doing so realizing his dreams. He was stronger and more cunning than the men who had come  before. The man who had fought many a war against the Frenchs wore he would capture the heart of the passionate young woman he came to Scotland to claim.
Tasting Fire
Shelly will award a $20 Starbucks GC to one randomly drawn commenter during the tour.
PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT!
Tasting Fire
by Shelly Holt
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

INTERVIEW:

Q – How did you come up with the idea for your book?

Shelly Holt –  I decided that a paranormal romance would fit my writing style and I knew I wanted to do a shape-shifter story.  There are so many, literally hundreds of similar shape-shifting novels out there and for my book to succeed, I knew I had to approach the project from a different perspective.

I sat down and decided that my shape-shifters would not exist due to magic in their world.  I created a plot that gave a plausible theory on how over the course of thousands of years, different cultures around the world, some geographically isolated from others, all came up variations of shape-shifter legends.

My heroine, Dr. Rae Hales, discovers that a thermophilic (heat loving) bacteria that lives in hot springs in various parts of the world, can cause the infected person to add a second DNA code to their own.  After contact with first the bacteria, and then an animal, they can then pass down the changes to their offspring.  I knew I had to make it a difficult infection to catch, otherwise everybody and their grandmother would be a shape-shifter by now.  Not everybody is able to become infected, only those with the right RNA receptors and then the genetic changes are passed down from one generation to the next.  It's far easier to be born a shape-shifter than to become one.

Once I had a theory on how the thermophilic infection worked, I had to come up with an animal that hadn't been overdone.  I was going through my bookshelf filled with library discards and found a book I had bought months earlier and forgotten about.  The book was about snow leopards, I knew then and there, I had found my shape-shifter.  I then spent a good week or so researching cultures that would exist within the habitat range of the Asian Snow Leopard.  It was easy to outline my plot after that.

Q – What would you want your readers to know about you that might not be in your bio?

Shelly Holt – I originally wanted to write YA, but realized (after more than 40 rejection slips) that I had a much better chance of success with more adult content.  That is why my book is so heavy on plot, yet quite adult in regards to the love scenes.

Q – As far as writing goes, what are your future plans?

Shelly Holt – After I finish doing the publicity for Tasting Fire, I will be diving back in and writing the next book in the series.  The second book will take place about thirty years after the events in the first one.  I have already completed a first draft of chapter one.

Q – Do you have an all time favorite book?

Shelly Holt – Yes, I do.  My favorite book is The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo.  I feel it's the most perfect children's book ever written.  I am sad only because it was written in 2003 and I was an adult when I read it.  I feel a little cheated.

Q – Do you outline your books or just start writing?

Shelly Holt – I have to outline my story.  I don't always stay within the outline of course, but my books are so heavily dependent on mythology and folklore that I have pages and pages of research that are used in conjunction with my outline.  In fact right now my desk is full of research for my second book in the Tasting Fire series.

Q – Have you started your next project?  If so, can you share a little bit about your book?

Shelly Holt – Yes, I have.  The second book in the series will take place about thirty years after Tasting Fire.  In it, the fountain of youth will be discovered.  The story will introduce us to several new shape-shifting species.  The first one that I have written into the story is the Naga.  The Naga are a race of shape-shifting snakes.  They are a sect of kings, warriors, and priests that have actually been worshiped in India for thousands of years.  In fact, many Indian clans claim to be descended from the Naga.  I have print outs of some of the artwork dedicated to them and they are INCREDIBLE!!!  Great inspiration for a paranormal romance.

Q – What is your favorite reality show?

Shelly Holt –  House Hunters, I love that show, I can spend all day watching it.

Q -  Who is your favorite actor and actress?

Shelly Holt – Christopher Walken and Toni Collette.

Q – Can you tell us a little about the black moment in your book?

Shelly Holt – The blackest moment is when humans first react to the knowledge of shape-shifters in the world.  I wanted to use real world examples of xenophobia for dramatic effect.  Kai reflects on the experiences of Japanese-Americans during WWII in the United States and how they were treated and fears an equally severe treatment or worse of his own people in Central Asia.

Q – If you were a casting director for the film version of your book, who would play your lead roles?

Shelly Holt – The very sexy Yul Kwan from Survivor (apparently, I was watching the wrong reality show!) would play Kai Tenzin.

 Dr. Rae Hales would have to be the lovely Scarlett Johansson, although per Wikipedia, Ms. Johansson is currently a few years younger than the character, as I wrote her.

The charming James Hong is Nawang Wangdo.  In fact, when I was writing the book, it was his voice in that little theater in my head that gave breathed life into Nawang. You can really hear him when you read the original folktale I wove into the book (How the snow leopard lost her roar.) I would love to hear him read that out loud, in real life.

Dr. Vadim Leonidov was unusual in that his character was fully formed in my head, at least his appearance was.  I found I didn't need a physical model to base the character on as I wrote the book.

When the book was being edited, I had a very strange experience I would like to share with your readers.  I was at the grocery store and while I was waiting in line, I picked up a People Magazine and was absentmindedly thumbing through it and all of a sudden there was Vadim looking up at me.  I quickly read the caption and it was an actor by the name of Hugh Laurie, whose work I am not familiar with, but it was quite startling to see my character staring up at me.

Q – Anything else you might want to add?

Shelly Holt – Yes, Tasting Fire is an unusual combination of elements.  The book has an exceptionally strong plot and even stronger character development, due to the fact that I refused to use magic to haphazardly explain the presence of shape-shifters in the world.  Tasting Fire also has strong spiritual tones as well and because of the extremely hot love scenes, it really puts the book in its own genre.

Many new authors use other books to help readers understand what type of book they are promoting.  Tasting Fire is so unique, I can't do that.

I am quite proud of the story and appreciate the opportunity to come on the blog today and share my experience of writing it with you.

EXCERPT:

The short ride to Kizhi island was exhilarating on the open hydrofoil.  Kai helped Rae off the boat as it docked at the seven mile long island.  The tour group followed their guide off the dock and onto the island.  They listened intently as the guide in stilted English advised them that the site had become a  world heritage site in nineteen-ninety.  There were more than eighty pieces of wooden architecture that made up the outdoor museum’s collection.  The guide then gestured for the large group to follow him.  The tour group was led up to a magnificent structure.  The center piece of the collection that was known as The Church of Transfiguration.

Rae felt as if she had stepped right into a storybook.  The guide started his official recitation on the history of the structure “the Church of Transfiguration has twenty two onion domes.  It was built during the reign of Peter the Great.  No nails were used in the construction and it was created by using interconnecting wood pieces only.”  Kai stood back taking picture after picture of the breathtaking silver domes.  The guide then indicated for them to enter and put his finger over his mouth to indicate silence.

  As Kai and Rae walked in they could hear why the guide silenced them.  A trio of singers were performing a deeply moving mass.  Behind them a gold leaf Russian icon painting glinted in the light that was streaming in through the dusty windows.  The effect transported the tour group back in time.  They were now in a time before digital cameras, before cell phones, to a time when the Tzars ruled Imperial Russia with an iron fist.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

My name is Shelly Holt and I live in the middle of the harsh and unforgiving Mojave desert. I write my stories looking out of a window that shows sweeping desert views. Outside is a barren and severe landscape, yet inside my head lives a world filled with exotic shape-shifters come to life, pulled from the pages of myth and legend, ready to entice and seduce any reader brave enough to take them on.

It's funny, I never wanted to be a writer!  In 7th grade English, we were given an assignment.  We were told to write an original poem and turn it in the next day.  I was determined to turn in not a good poem, but a great poem.  I spent the whole night working on it instead of watching my favorite show, The Waltons.  (Hey! it was 1980.)  I turned it in the next day.  Apparently, I succeeded a little too well and was accused of copying it from a book. (1980 remember, no internet yet).  The teacher stated and I quote "this is too good for a seventh grader, where did you copy it from?"  Well, I didn't write for 30 years after that. In my 40's, after a life changing move to rural Nevada as a caregiver to my father, I realized I needed a way to earn a little money on the side.  I did some research on the internet and read all about a certain little book, about a certain little college student and a handsome billionaire with some ahem! (issues.)  I decided after reading that book, I could do that, and Tasting Fire was born. I'll admit it's been strange revisiting a talent buried deep inside for so long, forgotten, but apparently not lost. It's been an important journey and one I am quite thankful for and excited to see where it takes me.

Shelly Holt

 P.S. Mr. Jordan, I really did write that poem!

Bobble Head Babes -- It's Been A While

It has been a while since I've written about the bobble head babes and their continuing saga. November has been a hectic month. Wow eight days in Disney Land, Thanksgiving, and VBT through goddessfish for Highland Magic.

Now, A Marriage of Inconvenience has been released. Today was it's first day out. Rogue Phoenix Press is offering this book for $0.99 through December 7th. The VBT for A Marriage of Inconvenience begins on December 10th. Hope all of you will stop by during the tour and leave a comment.

My walking partner jus bought a used purple Lexus convertible. Her favorite color is purple. I haven't seen it yet but I'm sure it is gorgeous.

The Beavs won today. Woo hoo... They won 77 to 3. This is their highest score ever. They possessed the ball 12 times and scored 11. They probably would have scored the 12th time but the clock ran down.

Amazing...

My WIP is Highland Miracle. I finished chapter 3 a couple of days ago and the plan is to finish chapter 4 tomorrow. I also plan on running three miles then lifting weights at the Courthouse. Sometimes I wonder why I'm always so tired. Good Golly Miss Molly I'm not thirty. But then I do tend to date myself.

So here is a picture of the real bobble head babes after we finished the Newport half marathon.
