EXCERPT

"Please, please, please," I begged for what seemed like the millionth time. That one word played like a broken record in my head as if that was the only word I knew.

For the past three days, I pleaded with anyone who came near me. I wasn't begging for my life. That was the last thing I wanted. Death was much better than the torture I'd endured. All I wanted was for someone to kill me.

I felt foolish now for spending so much of my life concerned about death. Death was not the worst thing that could happen to someone. Living a life full of pain and fear was much more agonizing.

Since I'd been yanked from the prison, near drowning and beatings were all my life consisted of. I couldn't figure out why they didn't just kill me, but I didn't ask. Every time I opened my mouth, pain followed. I quickly learned to keep quiet.

Even after the days of torture, I thought they would at some point end my misery. Of course, Dr. Grant wasn't kind enough for that.

"The Elders and I had a meeting last night. Since you've already established a bond with the criminals, we've decided you will get us the information we want," Dr. Grant told me after having me pulled from the pit for the third time that day. "But this time, we're giving you a little more incentive."

I flinched. What more motivation was there? They weren't about to offer me my life again. If I wasn't successful with my own life on the line, why would I do it knowing they were going to kill me?

Horror and comprehension hit like a bolder. My breath came quick and unsteady. My hands trembled.

Page.

Dr. Grant chuckled. "I see you're catching on. After all you've put me through in the last few days, I'm not stupid enough to offer you your life again. Besides, that clearly doesn't mean much to you. But, you might be willing to work harder if Page's life is at risk."

Tears sprang to the tiny slits that were the remains of my beaten eyes. I shook my head and ignored the pain the action caused. "No," I mumbled through swollen lips.

His chuckle turned into a booming laugh. "You're actually willing to let your twin sister die for you? Are you really that selfish?"

Sobs rumbled through my chest. "No," I said again, forcing more anger into my tone. "Leave her alone." My words were so indistinct I wondered if he even understood.

When a twig snapped and a blurred figure moved toward me, I cringed away.

"Let me make this very clear, Addaline," he said from so close I could feel the heat radiating off his body. "This is not a request. You will do as you're told or Page will die."

"Please," I begged again, the broken record spun out of control now. Once again, that was the only word that my mind could conjure up through the thick haze in my head. It angered me. I wanted to scream at him, but I couldn't. All I could do was beg pathetically.

Dr. Grant didn't even acknowledge my pleading. He simply said, "Take her back. I'm done with her."

For a second, I thought he meant the pit, and my body stiffened. I was tired of this game--physically and emotionally exhausted. I just wanted it all to end. It seemed like a cruel joke that he would continue to suck every last bit of emotion out of me before he finally let me rest in peace.

Once again, Mac tossed me up on his shoulder, but before he could get too far, Dr. Grant said, "You have one day."

I knew at that moment I was not going back to the pit.

Water dripped off my saturated skin, hair, and dress, leaving a muddy trail behind us to the prison. Not that anyone needed the trail to follow us. I moaned loud enough for anyone in a mile radius to hear.

The first gust of cold air came when Joe opened the prison door for Mac.

"Whoa, that's cold. I'm definitely going to have to change after this," Mac said, and we both shivered.

Joe laughed. "Why do you think I had you carry her?"

"Thanks," Mac said, and shuddered again. "Remind me to return the favor later."

Mac walked in ahead of Joe. The silence in the prison was more profound than it had been before. I didn't want to think of all the helpless teens that had been drug out of here while I was being tortured.

"You two get to the corner over there and turn around," Joe ordered once we were standing outside the Forgotten's cell. He must have realized there was no quick way to drop me off since they couldn't shove me from behind.

The cell door creaked open and Mac took two quick steps in, dumped me on the ground, and darted out.

My breath hissed between my teeth as I choked back the shriek that crept up my throat.

"We'll be back," Mac warned with a chuckle.

"One day," Joe said.

Because even the slightest movement would have tipped me over the edge to unconsciousness, I didn't acknowledge them.

Despite his aversion to me before, Xander was at my side in an instant. "What did you do to her?" he asked, concern thick in his tone.

The guards merely chuckled and sauntered away.

"She's soaked," Xander said. "I need your coat, Grandfather."

"That won't do any good. We'll need to get that dress off of her."

I tried to shake my head. "N...no," I stuttered already trembling from the frigid air. But, dark or not, I wasn't about to let them strip me down. Dr. Grant and the Elders hadn't managed to take all my dignity, and I wasn't losing what little I had left here in the prison to the Forgotten.

A warm hand clutched the fabric clinging to my thigh. I flinched away automatically then moaned.

"Shhh, Addaline," Xander soothed. "I'm not going to hurt you. I just have to get this dress off." He didn't wait for my reaction before yanking my dress above my hips. Surprisingly, I wasn't jostled much at all.

"Please don't," I muttered, trying to pull the dress back down. Tears streamed down my cheeks.

He ignored me. "Do you think you can hold her while I pull the dress off?" he asked Julius. "I don't think she'll put up much of a fight. They beat her pretty bad."

"Of course. Whatever I can do to help," Julius said.

Four hands gripped me as lightly as possible. "We'll try not to move you too much," Xander assured.

Slowly, they sat me upright. Air hissed through my teeth and more tears streamed down my cheeks. The pain was excruciating. "Please stop," I whimpered.

"It'll all be over in a minute, I promise," Xander said. "Do you have her?"

"Yes," Julius said.

"I'm sorry," Xander whispered. Then without warning, he gripped my wrists in one of his hands and wrenched them over my head.

A bloodcurdling scream escaped my lips, but they didn't stop. More torture, I thought. No, I couldn't handle anymore. "Kill me," I tried to tell them, but my words were lost in the sobs.
Sasha took her revolver from Alvin, fished her spray out of her pocket and finally took a deep slow breath. "I really hope it's not a vampire overlord," she said with a strained smile and opened her door.

REVIEW:

Carin for My Reading Obsession

Sweet Sexy Sadie is a quick read with a fun plot line, Sadie is researching the migration of butterflies for her thesis she meets Brody when her car overheats in the desert pretty soon the car isn't the only thing overheating. Sadie also has a stalker of a paranormal variety.

The action happens quick and without a lot of back story to have this come out novella length. I enjoyed the chemistry that is immediate between Brody and Sadie. I liked the paranormal element to her stalker and the bond that Sadie and Brody share to overcome the trials in their path to happiness.

This time of year with the kids in school you have lots of chances to sit and wait this is the perfect length book for those times and you can get in a fun love story while you are at it.

BLURB:

From the first time Sadie’s eyes met those of Brody McKenna in the hot Sierra Madre Mountains, theirs was a potent attraction—not gentle, slow, and easy, but hot, hard, and all-consuming. The daughter of a dysfunctional family, Sadie had dreams no man could wrench from her with hot sex and an all-consuming passion. She’d challenge this alpha male with all the strength she possessed. But her red hair, fiery temperament, and indomitable spirit obsessed Brody...and he knew he had to find a way to show her he was more than he appeared and convince her to make a life with him.

EXCERPT

Sadie didn't know what to make of Brody. Exceptionally handsome and charismatic, he'd made her smile the first time she saw him sauntering down the road toward her. Good lord, but he looked as if he owned the world. Tall, tanned from the sun, amber-green eyes that sparkled as if he saw some light humor in everything. He was wiry and sleek; a quickness about him surprised her. His blue-black hair was tied back with a leather thong, his chin angular.
Perhaps he did own this part of the Sierra Madres. His family seemed to own most of this town.
Her research had brought her to this place, Cactus Junction. Now the prospect of getting to know an interesting man would be an added perk. In the bathroom she slipped out of her clothes and into a tepid shower. A few minutes later she emerged squeaky clean and ready for the next part of her adventure.
Unpacking her clothes and taking out her laptop, she opened it. What do explosive experts do?  Hmmm....
Why, they blow up things. What would he blow up around here?
Lord but that sounded crazy to her. Before typing in the necessary info to pull something up on Google, she leaned back, relaxing into her chair. The wallpaper was outdated, and the old fan complimented the air conditioning. She realized she liked the atmosphere.
Enough musing. Mining in the Sierra Madres. Let's see, it says here they mined silver as early as 1521.
Sadie scrolled down the paper. Ok… Montezuma, in 1492, was already drinking hot chocolate from goblets made of gold. Maybe she should be studying this instead of her research thesis. The migration of butterflies. Once she'd thought the topic was romantic. Chasing after butterflies…
So what are they doing now? Junior drilling companies… She wondered if that was what the McKenna Clan was, a junior company. How soon was too soon to ask? Probably not on their first dinner together. Knowledge brought power and she firmly believed everything happened for a reason. Then her chance encounter in this place was not a coincidence.
This says the companies are drilling to find the ore. So… Do they still need explosives? If not, he didn't do much for his day job. Perhaps the family had millions stashed away. At first glance this hotel was theirs and Brody had told her the land this town sat on belonged to them. But millions in the Caymans? Probably not.
She closed her laptop. Then leaning back, she shut her eyes and tried to cleanse her mind of all thought. A little catnap might be in order, but her heartbeat so fast she didn't think sleeping was a plausible scenario. Eager to meet the McKenna Clan and begin her research, her body was wound tight as a rubber band ready to snap.
The bag of chips in her purse seemed to call to her just after her stomach growled its discontent. Trying to ignore the excessive calories and her empty belly, she rose and wandered to the window. Dinner would be that much better if she waited. Outside, the sun still beat down and one could see heat waves decorate the street.
The air conditioner chose that moment to blow out cold air. Sadie wrapped her arms around herself then turned the monitor down a notch.
Back at the window she looked at the street below. A man walked down the sidewalk, and as he grew closer, he stopped and shielded his eyes then gazed up to her room. Sadie's breath caught in the back of her throat and another chill swept through her. This time it wasn't caused by the air conditioner. The sight of the man sent an eerie feeling to the pit of her stomach. She stepped back in an attempt to remove herself from his line of sight.
The knock startled her away from the window. She jumped, afraid it might be the man she'd just seen but knowing it wasn't.
"Sadie? Sadie, you in there?" Brody called from outside the door. Damn, but she'd recognize his voice anywhere. A smile crossed her face. She meant to forget the stranger.
"Come in." Sadie looked back to the street below. No one was there. Once again she rubbed her arms. She felt as if a ghost had just swept through her, leaving her cold from her core outward.
"You okay?" Brody stepped inside, looking concerned.
"No, I don't think so. I…" Pausing, she hesitated to tell him what had just happened. What she'd felt. He'd think she was crazy.

The Talisman

Running from a marriage that lasted one night, Dr. Moriah McKeown discovers the land she has settled on is coveted by determined and lawless men. Yet the proud young woman who once vowed never to abandon her home has second thoughts when her adopted children are threatened. Her only recourse is to enlist the aid of a dark, dangerous gun for hire.

Haunted by the past and a betrayal he will never forgive, Ian Civanovich uses his fast gun and his reckless courage to forget the faithlessness of a woman in his past. He will trust no female--nor will he rest until the threat hovering over Moriah McKeown is put to rest.

Buffalo Creek,
South Dakota
1895

Hot, dry air scorched the prairie grass. Sweat slid along his spine. Danger clung to every whisper; seemed to swirl and grow with each passing second. Ivan Civanovich watched the woman below. With deadly purpose, he studied the lady who had hired him--the woman who had bought his gun and perhaps death.
"Reckless courage," Ivan mused.
"Si Senor, she does have what you call a great courage, but I don’t know about the reckless part. She is always so very careful," Pedro said.
"I’m a dangerous man, Pedro."
"This is why she hired you."
"The lady has no business hiring men like me. She’s a woman. She is supposed to nurture lives."
"She needs you to keep the bad men from taking the land away--our home," Pedro said.
Ivan pushed the tip of his hat back from his brows. From his vantage point, he considered the woman while she hung the freshly laundered white sheets on the line. A strange shudder swept through him, his muscles tensing with the sudden feeling he knew this woman, had known her forever. The sensations were too strong, the feelings too acute, and it troubled him because knowing her was impossible.
Her hair, a wild mop of red curls, battled with the stiff, hot wind rising off the prairie. The breeze and her hair flowed in undulating currents between the lines, threatening to tangle themselves in the wire. She bent over at the waist, giving him a perfect view of her backside while she toyed with something on the ground. Seconds later she picked up the object of her curiosity, turned it over in her hands then tossed it aside.
He didn’t like to think about what could happen to her in the next few weeks. She’d advertised for a gun for a hire. She didn’t know what she bargained for, and he’d bet his inheritance she didn’t have any idea what kind of trouble she’d purchased.
When she looked up the hill, his grin widened. She couldn’t see him, but her shoulders tensed and she sucked air. Her hand touched her forehead, shielding her eyes from the blinding sunlight. She scanned the horizon, turning a complete circle before she stopped.
"Good," he said, "she is cautious."
"She knows someone is up here," Pedro announced.
"She’s got more starch in her drawers and the stiffest backbone of any woman I’ve ever seen." Ivan whistled through his teeth, his eyes intent and focused upon the woman.
"Si." Pedro agreed. "She sure enough does but her heart is made of spun gold."
Ivan wiped the back of his hand across his forehead. Beads of sweat dripped down his back. His gaze swept across the barren landscape then followed the line of trees that bordered the creek. He lifted the glasses to his eyes and turned his attention to a spot about a mile north of her ranch. The railroad wanted easement rights. So why wouldn’t she sell to them. "Spun gold, huh." He dropped the binoculars, letting them dangle from their strap around his neck.
"Si, boss."
"I see." Ivan leaned forward, resting his forearm on the saddle horn.
Ivan wasn’t sure he understood. Women had a lot of fine qualities, many of which he didn’t want to live without but a soft, feminine heart shouldn’t be deciding life and death matters.
Spun gold. No, he’d never met a female with a heart of gold, spun or otherwise. He’d never known a woman who wouldn’t betray a man for a piece of gold. Save one, he amended, and his best friend had married her. Alexi Popov had his trials too. He had kidnapped Angela and spirited her away to his home in the Crimea. In the end though, he gave up his title, his land, and most of his wealth for Angela. He followed her back to America and married her.

This is a wonderful tale, full of action, emotion and a bit mystical at times. Enjoy this one.
