EXCERPT

Coast of England 1816

"It's a bloody cursed day." Damian Andrews swept the child into his arms and waded through the pounding surf to the beach. He braced himself against the out-going current then sloshed through the crashing waves. Salt spray clung to the wind, stinging his nostrils.

Damian turned. Beneath his ribs, his heart pounded the cadence hard and fast. He swore again as he watched the captain shout orders to his crew. The French brandy that was supposed to have arrived this night would have to wait.

Standing in the longboat, the captain of the ship that brought the brandy as well as the political refugees from the Germanies held a torch aloft--the only light in the vast darkness. "Hurry, laddie. We have human cargo tonight and the tide is changing."

A little girl whimpered.

Damian pulled her into his arms, bent on protecting her at all cost.

"It's all right. You will all be together soon." The smuggling of French brandy was a cover for the cause that meant so much to him. Religious and political refugees--at times it seemed they came in droves. All were seeking a better life. A life of freedom. "Your mother is coming as well as your baby brother. You will all be safe."

Damian looked to the captain. "The father?" he queried.

"He didn't come with his family. He said he had one more thing to do. You must hurry."

The child leaned into Damian, her little face nuzzling his shoulder, her silent sobs gut-wrenching. He pulled her closer, cursing at the elements as well as mankind and wishing he could find a way to shield the tiny child from all harm. He knew the feat to be impossible. The little girl touched a place in his heart and for a moment filled that broken space with light. Yes, the mother would be with her children, but why had the father stayed where his life was in peril? He had learned long ago one could come to regret rash actions. And he'd also learned one could lose all chance at love in one instant.

Lord, but he'd lost his concentration and in losing that, he could well lose his edge.

No secrets-- no lies. The thought haunted him.

His life was a lie, but he would change nothing until his penance was paid. A constant drizzle soaked him to the skin. The wind sent goose bumps rising on his arms. He reached shore and handed the girl over to Aric Lakeland, a trusted friend and accomplice in this night's work, then turned and walked back to the longboat. Her baby brother as well as her mother waited.

He had never meant to get involved. It was the greatest of ironies that he was here now. He'd been a man who loved his family and his home.

He'd been content but that seemed years ago--a life time.

It felt like centuries.

The captain spoke, his voice hushed. "Hurry, now, Master Damian.

It's the watch. They are due to ride by here any time now. The patrols have doubled these last few weeks. I fear it's not as safe as it used to be." The captain handed over the baby wrapped in blankets. Damian stared at the child. The babe couldn't be a year old. The child didn't make a sound, not even a whimper.

This was injustice, a travesty. He looked at the mother. "Can you make it on your own?" He prayed the fragile lady standing before him had more courage than she appeared to have. She nodded and with the captain's help, she stepped into the ocean, struggling for balance. Yet her shoulders were squared and her spine stiff.

As soon as the captain placed the babe in Damian's arms and the three of them were headed for land, he gave orders. Two sailors rowed out to sea, moving toward the black ship that rose and fell on the distant waves.

On a cliff above, the dark silhouette of a third man, Ryder McClaren, could be seen for a brief moment. He waved his arms then disappeared into the shadows once more.

"Hurry," Damian bade the mother, his hand resting on the small of her back, urging her forward.

A tomboy captain must guard a roguish prince during wartime. Can they save their country from invasion while learning to lead--and falling in love?

BLURB

Tomboy Alex Bonham has fought her male peers tooth and nail to prove herself worthy to become captain of the king’s guard. When her country is invaded by Danes, she is ordered to take the king’s younger son, a charming but irresponsible rake, away from the front lines for safekeeping.

Alex walks a difficult line, trying to balance her growing attraction to Prince Holden with her dedication to duty and her responsibility to keep him safe from robbers, Danes...and even himself. But when they are drawn into the struggle to defend East Anglia from occupation, both the prince and his captain must grow. Can spoiled Prince Holden evolve into a good man who could lead the kingdom--one Alex can trust with her heart?

EXCERPT

She and the prince were easier with one another after their day in town. They continued their sparring matches at regular intervals, varying tandem sword training with hand to hand. The craft of unarmed combat continued to prove frustrating for the prince, especially when defending against her attacks.
“Impossible,” Holden lamented one afternoon as she put him on his face in the dirt for the umpteenth time, effortlessly seating herself atop his back. “You can’t have done that. Again.”
“I’m not using strength.” She wound up his arm a bit more to demonstrate. “This is leverage.”
“I concede.” He went limp, and she sat on him for a moment longer, liking their position rather more than she strictly should. She made herself move before the moment stretched too long, heaving off him, and offered him a hand up.
He reached for her, and gave her no warning whatsoever before yanking hard. Off-balance, she toppled helplessly onto him. He rolled her under his body, pinning her arms with his hands, his waist sinking between her thighs.
“There,” he said with satisfaction. “Escape this.”
She clenched her fists in exasperation, trying breathlessly to ignore the sensation of his body weighing down on her, pushing her thighs apart and pressing against the center of her. “I haven’t showed you everything I know. Not yet.”
She bucked her hips up sharply and kicked her heels against the ground, unseating him. They rolled, trading advantage back and forth. He couldn’t pin her, but neither could she escape without hurting him. They thrashed about wildly, kicking up dust, dirt, and bracken as they struggled. He clutched her tightly against his chest. He was laughing, and she realized she was too. They abruptly fetched up against one of the log segments surrounding the fire ring, and she found herself lying on top of him, her face a few inches from his.
They froze there, and their laughter faded. He did not try to dislodge her again. His eyes grew warm and deep. He was still smiling, his lips parted slightly. She lost herself in his gaze, wavering on the verge of sinking down to taste his mouth.
She felt his hands settling slowly on her waist, anticipating her kiss. He was smeared with dirt. Bits of dried fern stuck to the sweat on his face and body, tangled in his untidy hair. He looked so good he almost seemed edible. Hypnotized, she was tempted to bend her head and lick a droplet of perspiration right off his cheek.
Carl was watching them, she knew.
“You’re a mess,” she observed, hearing the breathlessness in her voice. “Get up and wash that dirt off. Carl almost has the supper ready.”
The spell was broken.
She climbed off him, briskly dusting all the twigs and bracken off her clothes, using her fingers to pluck what she could out of her hair. It was so bad she’d have to get out her comb and re-weave her braid.
The prince went to splash in the pond, and she disciplined herself not to watch. Carl looked up as she went to the wagon for her comb and returned to the fire.
“One of these days he’ll weary of you rubbing his nose in the dirt and give you a right good thrashing,” he said amiably.
“On the day he can, I’ll be proud of him.” She slouched by the fire and began to unravel her braid, all but exhausted. She rubbed her neck, which was covered with grit and dust. That was too damned close for comfort. She’d have to see to it there was no more light horseplay of that sort.
“Ohhh, will you look at him,” Carl muttered, gazing past her toward the pond, and Alex barely managed to stop herself before she obeyed.
“Look at what?”
“The results of your handiwork.”
She snorted. The prince’s idea of modesty still left much to be desired. “Flaunting himself again, is he?” She began combing at the bottom of her hair, slowly working her way up as the tangles came out.
“You might say that.” Carl turned the spit where a pheasant the prince had managed to shoot was roasting, dripping juices on the fire and producing a mouthwatering smell. “He would be if anyone were looking, at any rate.”
“Well, I’m not.” She didn’t bother to keep the tartness from her voice. “I wonder why you are.”
“Purely to keep you informed, of course.” Carl chuckled. “It’s the least I can do.”
“Let me guess. He has two arms, two legs, and a cock he’s rather more than reasonably proud of. Just like any man.” She re-wove the braid briskly and tied it with a bit of leather.
“He’s sprouted a good bit more muscle than he had in Norwich. I’d have thought you’d appreciate a chance to enjoy examining your handiwork.” Carl wasn’t at all perturbed by her frank speech. “I believe he’s grown a bit more courtesy, as well.”
“If he had an ounce of politeness, he wouldn’t strip naked and wash in the presence of a lady.” She thought of making a mint infusion, then reached for their jug of ale instead and poured herself a mug.
“Well, mayhap if you want to be treated more like a lady, you could act more like one.” Carl glanced at her out of the corner of his eye, calculating how angry he was making her. “Instead of like a sergeant at the drill.”

“I act like what I am,” she muttered.

BLURB

Jessie loves his life as a carefree rally driver, until a chance meeting with a sexy red haired firefighter changes everything. As a Comet Shifter, Jessie’s never met another Snow Leopard shifter before finding Kit, the woman who’s haunted his dreams for the past five years.

Kit’s one tough female. She’s been keeping herself busy protecting those she cares for but deep inside she craves her mate. When her path finally crosses with Jessie sparks fly … and they aren’t all the good kind!

Just as they begin to get along, Kit’s dark secret is revealed, and it’s not only Jessie and Kit that will be put to the test in the aftermath.

EXCERPT

"Hey, Soph. Thanks for calling so fast."
"No problem, kitten. You know I'm always here for you. So, what's been happening? Those hot shot rally drivers giving you grief?"
"Nah, you know me, it's nothing I can't handle."
The hairs on Sophie's neck stood up at the strained tone her girl was using, and the fact Kit didn’t tell her off for using the nickname they’d first used with her when they found her. Normally, she was quick to tell them that she was far from a kitten.
"So, what's tugging at your tail then?"
"My mate."
Jake stiffened behind her as Sophie sucked in a shocked breath.
"Finally. He's found you."
"Not on purpose, he didn't. Oh, Soph. What do I do? He looked totally shocked to see me. Then another driver trash talked him, and the boys heard and became instant bodyguards. He just stormed off. Didn't even look back."
Jake leaned down to whisper in her ear, "Ask for his name. I'm going to find him tomorrow and help fix this."
She smiled as she glanced up at her mate, her alpha. Always there for their leap.
"You know your leap brothers will always have your back, Kit. They didn't do anything to him did they? And, Kit? Does this mystery man have a name?"
She chuckled a little at that, "His name is Jessie Lutrec. A playboy rally driver from Chile. And no, the boys didn't overstep with him. They didn't need to." Kit's heavy sigh came through the line.
"Are you sure you want to work the rally this year? You sound worn out and it hasn't even officially started yet. I know you’re still worried over the situation with Tina."
"Yeah, but Tina's safe now she's with Conner and living at your place, and if I stayed I would have gone looking for that bitch Robyn myself. And as much as the woman has it coming, I don't want to risk ending up in the system for taking her down."
Kit had never explained her reasons for wanting to keep such a low profile and Sophie and Jake had let her have her secrets. The situation with their youngest son wasn't good. His wheelchair bound mate had been left in a burning house by the woman hired to care for her, Robyn, and Conner had been hurt saving her from the flames. They were thankfully both all right now and living with her and Jake. But Robyn was still at large.
"Tina's father has arrived now. So, hopefully it will all be cleared up soon with Tina safe and with Conner."
"I hope so. I like her. She hasn't deserved the shit she's copped."
"Much like you, Kit. Neither of you have deserved any of the pain you've been dealt. I suspect Jessie has had his fair share of rejection and hurt too. I wonder if he's ever met another shifter. You know he's been dreaming of you for the past four years now, quite probably with no idea why. Seeing you today, realizing you're real and not simply a figment of his imagination would have been quite the shock."
Kit didn't respond straight away and Sophie's muscles tightened. Had she said the wrong thing and put Kit off side?
"Still think that's totally unfair. Why can't the women dream of their mates? I would have tracked him down years ago if I'd only known what he looked like."
She smiled as pride for her girl filled her. "Yet you tried to find him. Don't think for a moment Jake and I didn't know what those trips were about a few years back. You were searching Chile weren't you?"
Kit chuckled a little. "Yeah. I knew he'd be in South America. Since I was born in Chile, I assumed he'd be there. Damn, I was so naive. I thought if I simply walked around for long enough, he would see me and come get me. The two trips just confirmed that my leap family here in Tasmania is my home and life. I got so homesick on both trips, Soph. That's why I didn't go a third time."
"You know. Now you've seen Jessie, you can pull him into a bond-dream?"
"Really? I thought the male had to at least start things off."
"Adele pulled Dominic into a dream to tell him she was moving to Tasmania. Not many women initiate them. They don't normally have to. But I doubt Jessie knows about mates, Kit. I suspect he's currently more confused than you are about today. He's a lost one, kitten. Don't be too hard on the man just yet. You remember what it was like before Jake and I found you?"
"Yeah, it was horrific. Thinking I was some kind of freak that no one would ever want."
"Jessie's probably been feeling like that for the best part of the past ten years. Now he's been identified, he won't be alone anymore. Jake will contact him tomorrow and start educating him on what he is and his heritage. We'll help you both every step of the way, Kit."
"The whole leap will know."
The crack in Kit's voice brought tears to Sophie's eyes. She could understand Kit's fear of rejection but it was so unnecessary and heartbreaking.
